A vocal chain is the run of processors your voice passes through on the way to a finished record. Order it right and a bedroom take starts to sound expensive; order it wrong and the plugins fight each other. What a Vocal Chain Actually Is

Think of signal flow as water through pipes: your voice leaves the mic, hits a line of processors one after another, and comes out the other end. Two routing rules decide everything. Inserts run in series — each plugin processes what the one before it handed over. Sends (auxes) run in parallel — you split off a copy for time-based effects so the dry vocal stays untouched and you control the wet amount. Change the order of the inserts and you change the sound.

Why the Order Matters

Every processor reacts to whatever reached it. Feed a compressor a muddy, untuned signal and it clamps down on the mud. So the logic is simple: clean and correct before you enhance, control dynamics before you add space, and keep time-based effects on sends at the very end. Get that flow right and each tool helps the next instead of cleaning up after it.

The Chain, In Order

Here is the full sequence and the reason each stage sits where it does. You won't use every link on every song — but this is the order to follow.

  1. Clean the source. Strip hiss, hum and room noise first so nothing downstream amplifies it. A clean take is most of the battle — see how to record vocals at home.
  2. Tune. Set the song's key and scale first, then correct on the clean, dry signal — tuning reads pitch most accurately before EQ and compression exaggerate anything. Use Antares Auto-Tune for the effect, or the best free autotune plugins. Dial it in with my best auto-tune settings.
  3. Subtractive EQ. High-pass the rumble (60–100 Hz) and cut mud (200–450 Hz) before you boost anything. FabFilter Pro-Q is the workhorse; full breakdown in how to EQ vocals.
  4. Compression 1 (fast). A quick FET-style compressor like the 1176 catches peaks and keeps consonants snapping — 2–4 dB of gain reduction.
  5. De-ess. Compression lifts sibilance, so tame the harsh 'S' next with FabFilter Pro-DS or Waves R-DeEsser. Free options live in the best free de-essers.
  6. Compression 2 (slow). A slow opto like the Teletronix LA-2A or Tube-Tech CL 1B smooths the overall level. Two light stages beat one heavy one.
  7. Saturation. Add harmonics for warmth and presence with Soundtoys Decapitator or FabFilter Saturn 2 — keep it parallel or subtle.
  8. Additive EQ + air. Now boost: presence at 3–6 kHz, a gentle air shelf at 10–15 kHz. Doing it after dynamics means the boosts don't get squashed.
  9. Exciter / upward compression (optional). For a crisp, modern top end use the Aphex Vintage Aural Exciter; lift quiet detail with Waves MV2.
  10. Reverb (send). Place the vocal in a space on a send — short plate/room for pop, longer hall for ballads. Valhalla VintageVerb is a classic; free picks in the best free reverb plugins.
  11. Delay (send). Depth and width, tempo-synced and filtered, with Waves H-Delay or Soundtoys EchoBoy.
  12. Doubles & width (send). Keep the lead mono and centred; widen with Soundtoys MicroShift or Waves Doubler panned hard L/R, tucked under the lead.

Gain staging
Peaks around -10 to -6 dBFS with healthy headroom. Level-match every plugin in and out so you judge tone, not loudness.

Recording level
Set preamp gain so the loudest lines peak about -8 dBFS. A clean, fat, mono lead is most of the work.

Tuning
Correct key and scale first. Medium retune speed for natural slides; fast/hard only as a deliberate effect.

Subtractive EQ
High-pass 60-100 Hz, tame mud 200-450 Hz. Only cut what the vocal doesn't need.

Compression 1 (fast)
FET-style (1176): ~4:1, medium attack, fast release, 2-4 dB gain reduction to catch peaks.

De-essing
Target 5-9 kHz, 2-4 dB, only on harsh syllables. Two light passes beat one heavy one.

Compression 2 (slow)
Opto (LA-2A / CL 1B): 2-3 dB gain reduction for smooth, even level.

Saturation
Blend parallel or keep subtle, then pull back ~20%. Often best on an aux.

Additive EQ / air
Presence 3-6 kHz and air 10-15 kHz in small, broad moves.

Reverb (send)
Pre-delay 20-40 ms keeps the lead up front. Filter the return.

Delay (send)
1/8 or 1/4 note, return filtered (HP ~300 Hz, LP ~6 kHz). Automate throws onto phrase ends.

Common Mistakes That Kill a Vocal Chain

  • Over-compression — squashing the life out and calling 'louder' 'better'.
  • Too much de-essing — flattening sibilance until words lisp.
  • Too much tuning, or the wrong key in the tuner — robbing the take of emotion.
  • Reverb printed on an insert instead of a send — washing out the lead.
  • Delay too loud or unfiltered — competing with the vocal; filter and automate the return.
  • Not level-matching — being fooled by volume when you A/B.
  • Stacking plugins with no reason — every link needs a job.
  • Not checking in mono — width tricks that collapse on phones and clubs.
