Every commercial Pro Tools session I have sat in starts the same way, and it is not with a plugin. It starts with someone riding the clip gain until the take is even. Then the chain does the polishing.

The stock Pro Tools chain

Pro Tools ships with everything needed: Channel Strip, Dyn 3, and the AIR reverbs. The plugins are less fashionable than the boutique ones, but the chain below is what most commercial sessions actually run under the fancy stuff.

1. Clip gain before anything

This is the step that separates Pro Tools engineers from everyone else. Before a single plugin, ride the clip gain so every phrase sits in the same range. Ten minutes here saves an hour of compressor fighting, and it is why professional vocals sound level without sounding squashed.

2. Channel Strip - the corrective pass

High-pass at 80-100 Hz. One narrow cut for the resonance, usually 250-450 Hz on male voices and 400-700 Hz on female. Then the compressor section: ratio 4:1, attack 5 ms, release 80-120 ms, 4-6 dB of reduction. Channel Strip is a Focusrite Red emulation and it behaves like one — it grabs fast and lets go cleanly.

3. Dyn 3 De-Esser

Frequency around 6-7 kHz for most voices, 3-4 dB of reduction on the harsh S sounds only. Listen in Key Listen mode to make sure you are catching sibilance and not the whole top end. Over-de-essing turns a singer into a lisp.

4. Second compressor - glue

Dyn 3 Compressor after the de-esser: ratio 2:1, attack 15 ms, release 150 ms, 2-3 dB. Slower attack here lets the consonants through, which is what keeps the vocal intelligible in a dense mix.

5. AIR reverbs on sends

Two sends: a short plate around 1.2 s for the body, and a longer hall or delay for depth. Pre-delay 40-80 ms on the plate. High-pass the reverb return at 300 Hz and low-pass it at 8 kHz — that is the difference between a vocal in a space and a vocal underwater.

Pro Tools rooms tend to be treated, so a condenser makes sense. If your room is not treated, a dynamic is the smarter buy — less room, fewer problems to EQ away.

Are Pro Tools stock plugins good enough for vocals?

Yes. Channel Strip and Dyn 3 are transparent and fast. Boutique plugins add character, but the stock set covers every function a lead vocal needs.

What is clip gain and why does it matter?

It is level adjustment written into the audio before the channel. Evening out phrases with clip gain means the compressor only has to shape tone, not fix a 12 dB swing.

What de-esser frequency should I use?

Start at 6-7 kHz and adjust by ear. Male voices often sit lower, around 5-6 kHz, female voices higher, 7-8 kHz.

Should I use the same chain on every vocal?
