Ableton Vocal Chain: The 6-Device Stock Chain That Actually Works

You do not need a single paid plugin to get a professional vocal in Ableton. You need the right six devices in the right order, and the numbers that go in them.

Ableton's stock devices get dismissed constantly, mostly by people selling plugins. The truth is that EQ Eight and Glue Compressor are genuinely good, and the order you put them in matters far more than the brand name on them.

The chain, in order
Ableton ships with everything a lead vocal needs. The order below is the one that survives contact with real sessions — it is also the order every chain in the Vocal Chain Bible follows, whatever the plugins are.
1. Gate or Utility - clean the space
Start with Utility to set the level, not the fader. Aim for peaks around -12 dBFS and an average near -18 dBFS. If the room is noisy, add Gate before everything: threshold just under the quietest word, release around 200 ms so word tails do not get chopped. A gate that breathes is worse than no gate.
2. EQ Eight - subtractive first
High-pass at 80-100 Hz for most voices, 120 Hz for a thin male voice recorded close. Then one narrow cut where the voice honks — sweep a 4-6 dB boost with a Q around 6 between 250 and 500 Hz, find the ugly resonance, then invert it to a cut. Two cuts maximum at this stage. Everything else waits until after compression.
3. Glue Compressor - the level pass
Ratio 4, attack 3 ms, release Auto, threshold set for 3-6 dB of gain reduction on the loudest phrases. This is not the sound, it is the leveling. If you are pulling 10 dB here, the take is inconsistent — fix the performance or ride the clip gain first.
4. Compressor - the character pass
Second compressor, gentler: ratio 2, attack 10 ms, release 100 ms, 2-3 dB of reduction. Two compressors each doing a little always sounds better than one doing everything. This is the single most common difference between a bedroom vocal and a record.
5. EQ Eight again - additive
Now the tone. High shelf +2-3 dB from 8 kHz for air, a wide +1-2 dB around 2-3 kHz if the words are not cutting through. Small moves. If you need more than 4 dB anywhere, the microphone choice or the distance is the actual problem.
6. De-esser and reverb send
Ableton has no dedicated de-esser, so use Multiband Dynamics: solo the high band, set the crossover around 5 kHz, and compress just that band 3-4 dB on the sharp S sounds. Reverb goes on a send, never on the channel — a plate around 1.4 s with the pre-delay at 30-60 ms so the words stay in front.
The microphone still matters
Not as much as people think, but the difference between a $50 mic and a $400 mic is real: less noise to fight, less EQ to repair. These three land in the range where the chain above stops fixing problems and starts adding polish.

Can you get a professional vocal with only Ableton stock plugins?
Yes. EQ Eight, Glue Compressor and Multiband Dynamics cover everything a lead vocal needs. Paid plugins save time and add character, but they do not fix order or gain staging.
What order should the devices go in?
Gate, subtractive EQ, first compressor, second compressor, additive EQ, de-esser, then reverb and delay on sends. Corrective before creative, always.
How much compression is right for vocals?
3-6 dB on the first compressor and 2-3 dB on the second. Two gentle stages sound more natural than one aggressive one.
Should reverb go on the channel or a send?
A send. It lets you compress the vocal without compressing the reverb, and it keeps the words in front of the effect.
