Find your room modes

Parallel walls create standing waves at specific frequencies, called axial room modes. At those frequencies bass piles up or disappears depending on where you sit, which is why mixes do not translate. The first axial mode of a dimension is the speed of sound divided by twice that dimension.

How to use it

Enter length, width and height in meters or feet. The table lists the modes for each dimension up to the fourth order, sorted by frequency. Where several land close together, expect the strongest bass problems.

FAQ

What are axial modes?

The strongest room resonances, formed between two parallel surfaces such as the two side walls or floor and ceiling.

How do I use these numbers?

Treat the low frequencies with bass trapping, and avoid trusting mix decisions right at a mode. Moving the listening position also helps.

What speed of sound is used?

343 meters per second, the value at about 20 C.

Is it free?

Yes, free forever.
