Song Key Finder
Drop a track and find out what key it is in — with the Camelot code for harmonic mixing and the most likely second guess. 100% in your browser.
What key is this song in?
Drop a track above and this free song key finder tells you its musical key — like A minor or F# major — along with the Camelot code DJs use for harmonic mixing. It builds a chroma profile of the audio (how much energy each of the 12 pitch classes carries) and matches it against major and minor key profiles, the same approach used by DJ software.
How to use it
- Drop an audio file — a full song, a loop, or a stem.
- Read the detected key, its Camelot code and the confidence rating.
- Check the second guess when confidence is low — it is very often the relative major/minor, which shares the same notes.
Using the key for mixing and production
For DJs, tracks mix smoothly when their Camelot codes are the same or one step apart — see the Camelot Wheel for the full map. For producers, knowing the key of a sample means you can transpose it cleanly with the Pitch & Semitone Calculator, write a matching bass line with the Scale & Chord Finder, or generate progressions in that key.
Keep in mind that key detection reads the overall tonality: heavily detuned 808s, atonal percussion or long DJ mixes can fool any detector — ears always get the final vote.
FAQ
Is the song key finder free?
Yes - free forever, no sign-up. Analysis runs locally in your browser, so your file is never uploaded.
How accurate is it?
On melodic music it agrees with commercial DJ software most of the time. The most common miss is the relative key (A minor vs C major), which contains the same notes - that is why the second guess is shown.
What is a Camelot code?
A DJ-friendly way to write keys: numbers 1-12 plus A (minor) or B (major). Tracks whose codes match or differ by one number mix harmonically - 8A blends with 7A, 9A and 8B.
Can it detect the key of a short loop?
Yes, anything from about 2 seconds up. Short loops with clear chords often detect better than full songs with long intros.
