Spotify once analysed its entire catalogue — about 30 million songs — and one key came out on top: G major.

Why G? It's the sweet spot for the two instruments most songs are written on — guitar and piano. Here's what the data actually looks like.

More than a third of all songs sit in just four keys — G, C, D and A major. That's four keys out of 24 doing a third of the work.

Why G and C major win

It comes down to playability. On guitar, G major uses open strings and easy chord shapes; on piano, C and G major lean on the white keys. The instruments people compose on quietly shape what the whole world hears.

Producers working in-the-box aren't bound by finger-friendly keys, which is why hip-hop and electronic music (often built on samples and MIDI) spread out more — and lean darker and more minor.
