How to Make Your Song Louder (Without Killing It)

Loudness · Meshplugins.com

Loud isn't a limiter slammed to the ceiling. Here's how to make your song genuinely louder without crushing the life out of it.

1. Loudness starts in the mix — not the limiter

A balanced mix gets loud cleanly. A messy one never will, no matter how hard you push.

2. Control dynamics first — compression

Even out the peaks with compression so the limiter isn't doing all the heavy lifting.

3. Use the limiter last — and gently

Push 2-4 dB of gain reduction, not 10. Watch for pumping and distortion.

4. Mind your LUFS — streaming normalizes

Past about -14 LUFS, Spotify turns you down anyway - chasing more just costs dynamics.

5. Clean low end and harshness — they eat headroom

Tame mud and harsh highs; they steal the headroom you need to get loud.

FAQ

Why is my song quieter than pro tracks?

Almost always mix balance and dynamics - not the limiter setting.

How loud is too loud?

When it pumps, distorts, or the life is gone. Loud should still breathe.
