Every genre lives in a tempo pocket. Here's where the big ones sit — and why 120 BPM is the closest thing music has to a default.
The unofficial default tempo
120 BPM
The center of gravity for pop and house — the 'golden mean' of dance-friendly music
Knowing the pocket for your genre is the fastest way to make a beat feel right. These are the typical ranges producers actually work in.

Typical tempo by genre (BPM, midpoint)
*Trap and dubstep feel slower than their BPM because they use a half-time groove — the beat lands on every other count, so 140 BPM feels like 70.
Why tempo is a shortcut, not a rule
These ranges are pockets, not fences — plenty of hits sit outside them. But if a track feels off, tempo is the first thing to check: a boom-bap idea at 150 BPM will fight you, and a house groove at 90 won't move a floor.
FAQ
What BPM is most music?
Pop and house cluster around 120 BPM, the most common tempo overall. Hip-hop sits lower (80–100), while drum & bass runs 160–180.
What BPM is trap?
Trap is typically 130–145 BPM, but it uses a half-time feel, so it sounds closer to 65–72 BPM.

5+ years ago I moved to LA with zero connections and started building from nothing — 14-hour days, meeting people and interning at studios. It took me 5+ years to meet and interview 100+ Grammy-winning engineers — then I turned it all into the Vocal Chain Bible.
