The 160 family has been in studios since 1976 and it hasn't moved because nothing else does this. It's a VCA compressor: fast, punchy, aggressive. Switchable OverEasy (soft knee) or hard knee, with true RMS detection. On a snare it adds snap; on a bass it adds solidity; on a vocal it adds attitude. Cheap, and on countless records.

A discrete FET limiting amplifier with CineMag transformers, a sidechain insert and highpass, and stereo linking. The 1176 is the fastest compressor ever made — attack times measured in microseconds — which is why it grabs a vocal and glues it to the front of the mix. Modelled on the revision A 'Blue Stripe' — the earliest, most aggressive 1176. How to actually choose

Opto for vocals. An optical compressor uses a light and a photocell, which makes its response slow and program-dependent — it 'breathes' with the singer instead of clamping down. That's why the LA-2A and its descendants have been on more hit vocals than anything else, and why they're nearly impossible to misuse.

FET when you want the vocal in your face. The 1176's attack is measured in microseconds. It catches the very front of a consonant and pins the vocal to the front of the mix. Classic move: opto first to level the performance gently, then FET to add attitude. That two-stage chain is on an enormous number of records.

VCA for drums. Fast, punchy, and it adds snap rather than smoothness. The dbx 160 on a snare is a sound you already know even if you've never used one.

The honest part

Here's the part gear shops won't tell you: the plugin versions of all of these are extremely good now, and in a blind test very few people can pick the hardware. Buy hardware because you want to commit on the way in and stop second-guessing, or because you love the workflow of turning a real knob. Don't buy it expecting a night-and-day difference in the file — that's not where the difference lives.
