Black Friday 2026 · microphones
A microphone is the Black Friday purchase people most often get wrong, because the best mic for a treated studio is the wrong mic for a bedroom with bare walls. Fourteen are listed below, from $119 to the U 87, along with which type suits your room.

dynamics, condensers and modeling mics
Black Friday 2026 is Friday, November 27, and Cyber Monday is November 30. Most US music retailers start their holiday pricing the week before. Even then, a Neumann mic or a Neve preamp is rarely marked down dramatically. The reason is a pricing rule called minimum advertised price (MAP), which covers most pro audio hardware sold in the US and lets the brand, rather than the retailer, set the lowest price that can be advertised. Real Black Friday value in hardware usually arrives as a brand-wide promotion instead: an instant rebate, a plugin bundle or something extra thrown in. Plugins, by contrast, are cut hard every November.
All the prices here were checked at Sweetwater on October 24, 2026. Use them as your baseline: if a November price is not lower, it is not a deal. The links open the live product page, so you always see the current price, and I will update this page during Black Friday week.

Dynamic or condenser: decide this first
In an untreated room, a dynamic microphone wins. It hears much less of the room, so reflections off bare walls do not get baked into the vocal, which is why the SM7B turns up on so many home-recorded rap vocals. In a treated room, a large-diaphragm condenser gives you more detail and air. That is where the Neumanns, the Telefunken and the Sony earn their price.
Large-diaphragm condensers

1. Neumann U 87 Ai Large-diaphragm Condenser Microphone - Nickel — the studio reference
The multi-pattern large-diaphragm condenser most engineers compare everything else to, and the mic in Igor Mamet's chain for Trippie Redd. Buy it when the room and the budget are both ready.

Dynamics and modeling mics

10. Shure SM7B Dynamic Cardioid Vocal Microphone — the untreated-room pick
The dynamic on countless rap and podcast vocals. It is forgiving in an untreated room because it picks up far less of the room than a condenser does, though it needs plenty of clean gain or an inline booster.

11. Shure SM7dB Active Dynamic Microphone — SM7B with a built-in boost
The SM7B with a built-in preamp, so it works with any interface and needs no inline booster. It costs slightly more.

12. Electro-Voice RE20 Dynamic Broadcast Microphone with Variable-D — steady tone when you move

What to skip
Skip the second condenser if your room is untreated. It will not fix the room, and it will hear more of it. Skip the upgrade, too, if your current vocal problem is level, distance or harshness. Those are chain problems, and the Vocal Problem Finder will tell you which one you have in three questions. If you are still unsure which mic suits your voice, the Which Mic for My Voice quiz suggests three.
FAQ
Does the Shure SM7B go on sale on Black Friday?
Occasionally, and usually not by much, because it is sold under advertised-price rules. Sweetwater has it at $439 today, so measure any November offer against that.
Is a U 87 worth it in a home studio?
Only in a treated room. In an untreated bedroom, a $400 dynamic often gives a cleaner vocal than a $3,750 condenser, because the condenser records the room too.
SM7B or SM7dB?
They are the same idea, but the SM7dB has a built-in preamp, so it works with any interface. If yours has plenty of clean gain, the SM7B is enough.
What is the best vocal mic under $500 on this list?
For an untreated room, the SM7B or RE20. For a treated room, the AKG C214, Audio-Technica AT4040 or the Rode NT1 5th Gen.
Condenser or dynamic for rap vocals?
Both work. Dynamics are more forgiving in untreated rooms and handle loud, close delivery well; condensers capture more detail and air if the room is quiet.

5+ years ago I moved to LA with zero connections and started building from nothing — 14-hour days, meeting people and interning at studios. It took me 5+ years to meet and interview 100+ Grammy-winning engineers — then I turned it all into the Vocal Chain Bible.
