How to choose
Your amp picks the family; you pick the flavor. Most amps are designed around one type — EL34 Marshalls, 6L6 Fenders, EL84 Voxes — so the real decision is which brand's version of that type suits you. Matched means matched. Power tubes work in push-pull pairs, so buy matched duets or quads and have a tech check the bias after installation. Unmatched power tubes mean uneven wear, hum and wasted tone.
