The Best Free Plugins for Pro Tools (AAX) in 2026
Share
Free Plugin Guides · Meshplugins.com
Pro Tools only loads AAX. That one fact kills most "best free plugins" lists, because half the internet's favorite freebies ship as VST and AU only and will never show up in your insert menu. The eight plugins below all have a free AAX build for Pro Tools on macOS and Windows, and together they cover a complete vocal chain: dynamic EQ, two compressors, pitch correction, saturation, reverb, and metering.
Free AAX plugins that actually load in Pro Tools
8 FREE
Every one verified as AAX · macOS + Windows · no iLok needed for any of them
Pro Tools reads plugins from one folder: /Library/Application Support/Avid/Audio/Plug-Ins on a Mac, C:\Program Files\Common Files\Avid\Audio\Plug-Ins on Windows. No AAX file in that folder, no plugin. So this list is filtered twice: free, and AAX. Analog Obsession, Airwindows, Surge and Vital are all excellent and all missing here, because none of them ship AAX.

The 8 best free AAX plugins for Pro Tools
1. TDR Nova (Tokyo Dawn Labs) — best for dynamic EQ and de-essing
Nova is a four-band parametric EQ where every band can also be a compressor. Set a band at 6–8 kHz, switch its dynamics on, pull the threshold down until it only moves on esses, and you have a de-esser more surgical than most paid ones. Do the same at 250–400 Hz for proximity mud that comes and goes. Limitation: four bands go fast, so keep the broad tonal EQ in the stock EQ III and save Nova for the dynamic jobs. VST2/VST3/AU/AAX, macOS and Windows. Free at tokyodawn.net
2. TDR Kotelnikov (Tokyo Dawn Labs) — best for clean, transparent vocal compression
Kotelnikov is a wideband compressor with separate peak and RMS release and no analog coloring. On a lead vocal it is the "second compressor" in a serial chain: 2:1, slow attack, 3–4 dB of gain reduction, and it levels phrases without you hearing it work. Limitation: it adds no character, so if you want the FET or opto sound, this is not that plugin. VST2/VST3/AU/AAX, macOS and Windows. Free at tokyodawn.net
3. Valhalla Supermassive (Valhalla DSP) — best for reverb and long delays
Supermassive is a feedback-delay-network reverb and delay with more than 20 modes, and the best free reverb that loads in Pro Tools. For vocals, pick a mode like Gemini or Hydra on an aux at 100% wet, pre-delay 20–40 ms, Width down if the tail fights the stereo instruments. Limitation: it is built for huge spaces. Keep the stock D-Verb for tight rooms and use Supermassive for the washes and throws. VST2/VST3/AU/AAX, macOS and Windows. Free at valhalladsp.com
4. MFreeFXBundle (MeldaProduction) — best for filling every remaining slot
The free Melda bundle is 37 effects in one installer, all AAX: MCompressor, MEqualizer, MAutoPitch (pitch correction), MLimiter, MStereoExpander, MTuner, MAnalyzer, MSaturator and more. MAutoPitch alone is worth the install for a light tune on a melodic vocal. Limitation: the free versions show a reminder bar and lock out extras like upsampling and GUI resizing. The sound is not restricted. VST2/VST3/AU/AAX, macOS and Windows. Free at meldaproduction.com
5. Saturation Knob (Softube) — best for warmth and glue on a vocal
One knob, three modes: Keep High, Neutral, Keep Low. On a vocal, Keep High at 2–4 makes the voice denser without dulling the top; the current version adds gain, a high-pass filter and metering. Limitation: it installs through Softube Central with a free account; there is no standalone download. No iLok. VST2/VST3/AU/AAX, macOS and Windows. Free at softube.com
6. Graillon 2 Free Edition (Auburn Sounds) — best for pitch correction
Graillon 2 has had AAX since version 2.1, and the Free Edition includes the two modules a vocalist needs: pitch shifter and pitch correction. Set the scale to the song key, Smooth 30–60 ms for a natural tune or 0 for the hard Autotune effect; it is low-latency enough to track through. Limitation: the Free Edition stops at those two modules, and fast runs are less precise than Antares Auto-Tune or Melodyne. VST2/VST3/AU/AAX/CLAP, macOS, Windows and Linux. Free at auburnsounds.com
7. SPAN (Voxengo) — best for seeing what the EQ is doing
SPAN is the standard free spectrum analyzer: FFT display with adjustable block size and slope, mid/side mode, correlation meter, K-system and true-peak metering. Put it on the vocal and the instrumental bus and you can see the 2–5 kHz fight before you hear it. Limitation: the default slope makes a balanced mix look tilted until you learn to read it. VST2/VST3/AU/AAX, macOS and Windows. Free at voxengo.com
8. Youlean Loudness Meter 2 (Youlean) — best for LUFS and true peak on the master
Pro Tools' stock meters show peak and RMS; for streaming delivery you need LUFS, and the free Youlean is the plugin to get. Integrated and short-term LUFS, loudness range, true peak, streaming presets. Put it last on the master and check that the vocal-up chorus does not pass −1 dBTP. The free version omits the Pro version's history export. VST2/VST3/AU/AAX plus standalone, macOS and Windows. Free at youlean.co
Also free with an AAX build: Klanghelm DC1A (character compressor), Xfer OTT, Techivation T-De-Esser, iZotope Vocal Doubler, Acon Digital Multiply, Polyverse Wider, Kilohearts Essentials and the Blue Cat Freeware Pack.
Quick pick: which free AAX plugin for what
| If you need… | Reach for | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Esses and harsh 3–8 kHz under control | TDR Nova | Dynamic band only moves when the problem appears |
| Level a vocal without hearing it | TDR Kotelnikov | Clean RMS compression, 2–4 dB, no color |
| Hard Autotune or a light tune | Graillon 2 Free / MAutoPitch | Both AAX; Graillon is lower latency |
| Density and warmth | Saturation Knob | Keep High mode thickens without dulling |
| Vocal reverb or long throw | Valhalla Supermassive | Lush tails; use D-Verb stock for short rooms |
| Proof the mix is in spec | SPAN + Youlean | Spectrum on the vocal, LUFS on the master |
How to use them in a vocal chain
A Pro Tools vocal chain built only from this list, in insert order: stock EQ III high-pass at 80–100 Hz; TDR Nova with a dynamic band at 6–8 kHz for esses; a fast first compressor (DC1A, or MCompressor at 4:1, fast attack, 2–3 dB); Kotelnikov at 2:1 taking another 3–4 dB slowly; Saturation Knob in Keep High at 2–3; Graillon 2 if the song needs tuning. Two aux sends: Supermassive at 100% wet with 30 ms pre-delay, and the stock Mod Delay III for slap. SPAN on the vocal and the beat, Youlean on the master. That is serial compression, which is how most pros describe their vocal setups; the serial compression guide explains why two gentle stages beat one hard one. Run the order through the Vocal Chain Order Checker before you save it as a track preset.
When it's worth upgrading to paid
The two gaps in a free AAX chain are a true character compressor and a real plate or room reverb. For the first, the references engineers name most often are the UAD 1176 and LA-2A emulations, with FabFilter Pro-C 2 for the clean stage; for the second, Valhalla VintageVerb and Room. If you are going to buy, check the current deals first; the free chain above means you never buy on a deadline.
FAQ
Can Pro Tools use VST or AU plugins?
No. Pro Tools loads AAX only, and third-party wrappers are unsupported. If a plugin's download page does not list AAX, it will not work in Pro Tools.
Do free AAX plugins need an iLok?
None of the eight here do. Tokyo Dawn, Valhalla, Melda, Auburn Sounds, Voxengo and Youlean use no license at all; Softube uses its own free account.
Why does a plugin install but not show up in the insert menu?
Three usual causes: wrong folder (it must be in Avid/Audio/Plug-Ins), Pro Tools moved it to Plug-Ins (Unused) after a failed scan, or a stale cache. Fix the folder, move the file back, delete the AAX cache in /Users/Shared/Pro Tools, and relaunch to rescan.

Chains with the reasons left in.
The Vocal Chain Bible is 88 real vocal chains from hit records, as the engineers described them — mic, preamp, every plugin and setting, in order, with a free-plugin version of every chain. Every chain comes with the reason behind each setting, so you know what to move for your voice.

5+ years ago I moved to LA with zero connections and started building from nothing — 14-hour days, meeting people and interning at studios. It took me 5+ years to meet and interview 100+ Grammy-winning engineers — then I turned it all into the Vocal Chain Bible.
