English syllable counting is estimated by vowel groups with common exceptions; slang and names may be off by one. Flow labels: under 1.5 per beat is laid back, 2-3 is standard rap, over 3.5 is fast / triplet territory.
Why count syllables in lyrics
Syllables are the rhythm of a lyric. Lines with similar counts feel balanced and sing easily; a line that is three syllables heavier than its neighbours is where singers rush and rappers trip. This counter shows the syllables per line, how each line compares to the average, and, once you enter the tempo, how dense the flow is per beat. That number is the difference between a laid-back hook and a double-time verse.
Flow density by style
Around one to one and a half syllables per beat is a sung chorus or a slow flow. Two to three per beat is classic rap. Above three and a half you are in fast or triplet flow, where every consonant needs to be clean on the mic.
Toplining tip
Count the syllables of a reference song's chorus and match them. Melodies that fit the same syllable grid usually fit the same beat, which makes writing to a template much faster.
FAQ
How many syllables should a rap bar have?
Eight to twelve for a standard flow at 80-100 BPM; sixteen or more in double-time. What matters is consistency between bars, not a single number.
How accurate is the syllable counter?
Within one syllable for most English words. Names, slang and ad-libs can be off; the per-line comparison stays useful even then.
What is a good number of syllables for a chorus line?
Six to nine. Short, repeated lines with space between them are easier to sing along to and remember.
Does it work for other languages?
The counting rules are English. Spanish and Italian lyrics count reasonably; languages with silent letters or clusters will be less accurate.
