How to tune an 808

An 808 is a pitched instrument. If its fundamental does not sit on the root of the key, the low end fights the bass notes and the whole track feels out of tune, even if nobody can say why. Tuning is simple once you know two numbers: the frequency of the root note in the octave where 808s live (usually octave 1, roughly 30 to 65 Hz) and the note your sample is currently tuned to. This tool gives both, plus the semitone shift to apply in your sampler.

Why the octave matters

Below about 35 Hz most playback systems reproduce nothing; the listener hears only the harmonics. Above about 100 Hz the 808 starts to sound like a bass guitar. Octave 1 is the sweet spot, and the second harmonic is what carries the note on phones and laptops, so distortion and saturation are part of the tuning job.

Checking it

Play the 808 against the root note of a sine or a piano on the same octave; a slow beating means it is slightly off. The sine period in milliseconds is also useful when you draw the 808 by hand or tune a synth by its cycle length.

FAQ

What frequency should my 808 be?

The root note of the key in octave 1: for example 36.7 Hz for D1, 41.2 Hz for E1, 55 Hz for A1. Use the table for every key.

How do I find what note my 808 sample is?

Load it in a sampler and play a sine at the same note, listening for beating, or run the sample through the Note Frequency Calculator or Online Tuner.

Should the 808 follow the chord changes?

Yes, in most trap and hip-hop the 808 plays the bass line, which moves with the chords. Tune the sample to the root and play the notes from a keyboard.

Why can I not hear my 808 on my phone?

The fundamental is below what the speaker can play. Add saturation so the 2nd and 3rd harmonics (listed above) carry the note.
