THE SYNTH BIBLE '26

317 SYNTHS · ONE SCORECARD · NO FLUFF
IM
Written by Ivan Meshcheriakov (IvanFromRnD) — music producer and creator. I've interviewed 100+ Grammy-winning engineers over five years, and asked the producers among them the only question that matters: which box do you actually turn on? This guide is what came out of it, cross-checked against thousands of owner reports and far too many hours in synth shops.
LAST UPDATED July 2026 · 106 OF 317 MODELS HAND-SCORED · THE REST CARRY A CLEARLY MARKED EST. PROJECTED SCORE
ⓘ How to read this guide · Real sauce, no fluff
This is a subjective guide built on hands-on time, thousands of owner reports and 100+ Grammy-engineer interviews. A synth is not a tool — it's an instrument, and the one that makes you want to play is the right one, whatever it scores.

Be honest about the scores. 106 synths here are hand-scored by me. The rest carry an EST. badge: a projected score from brand, price class and architecture. A starting point, not a review.

The thing nobody tells beginners: the sound is maybe half of it. The other half is whether you reach for it — whether the knobs are under your hands, whether the sequencer invites you in, whether it boots in two seconds or two minutes. That's why Hands-On Feel is worth 12 points here, the same as the oscillators. A $349 MicroFreak you play every day will make more music than a $5,000 poly you're scared to touch.

And the honest advice: almost nobody needs a second synth. If you own one and you're not making music, another box will not fix that. Buy the cheap one. Learn it completely. Then come back.

On the EST. scores: 106 of 317 models are hand-scored. The rest are projections from brand, price class and design — directional, not measured. Trust your own ears, and treat any score as a starting point rather than a verdict from on high.

Prices are last-seen Sweetwater list prices and move around. Synths go on sale rarely — but they hold value on the used market better than almost any other gear, so buying well is buying cheap.
