This is a subjective guide built on hands-on gigs, manufacturer specs, and the hard-won opinions of working front-of-house engineers. PA is a tool that gets abused — the honest measure of a box isn't how it sounds in a demo, it's whether it survives a 200-show year and still cuts through a loud room.

Be honest about the scores. 209 units here are hand-scored by me. The rest carry an EST. badge: a projected score from brand, driver size, power and class. A starting point, not a review.

Scores are compared within type. A subwoofer has no dispersion pattern. A power amp makes no bass of its own. A passive speaker has no built-in amp. Each unit is scored only on the criteria that physically apply to it, then rescaled to 100 — everything else shows N/A. A sub is never marked down for lacking a horn it was never supposed to have.

The thing nobody tells first-time buyers: buy a subwoofer before you buy bigger tops. A pair of 12-inch powered tops and a sub will destroy a pair of 15-inch tops alone, for similar money — because the sub does the heavy lifting and frees the tops to do mids and highs cleanly. The order people buy in is backwards, and it costs them.

And the honest truth about watts: the wattage on the box is nearly meaningless on its own. Peak vs. continuous, at what impedance, at what distortion — a '3000-watt' budget amp and a '3000-watt' Powersoft are not the same machine. This guide weights real output before the limiter clamps, not the number on the sticker.
