The 10 best power conditioners

1. Furman M-8z — the rack essential

The updated entry Furman: surge protection, EMI/RFI filtering and nine outlets in one rack space. It's the first thing that goes into most racks — not for magic, but because one properly protected strip beats a daisy chain of hardware-store bars.

2. Furman PL-8C — the classic with lights

The studio-standard conditioner with retractable LED rack lights and higher-grade filtering. The lights alone have justified it in a thousand dark control rooms.

3. Furman SS-6B — the stage floor tank

Furman's steel six-outlet strip with surge protection and EMI filtering — the pedalboard-and-backline workhorse that costs a tenth of the rack units.

4. Furman P-1800 PF R — the amp-current specialist

The Prestige unit with power factor technology — a current reservoir for power amps that dip hard on transients. For big monitors and power amps where the wall itself is the bottleneck.

5. Black Lion Audio PG-2 — the studio-brand contender

Black Lion built its name modding interfaces, and the PG-2 applies the same obsession to power: serious filtration engineered for recording gear specifically.

6. Radial Power-2 — the pro utility

Radial's take on the rack conditioner: rugged, sensible, with the build quality their DI boxes are famous for.

7. Juice Goose JG 9 — the value rack

Nine outlets of protection and filtering at the friendliest rack-unit price on the list — the sleeper brand installers know.

8. ART PS8-II — the sequencer

Powers your rig up and down in stages — preamps before power amps, the reverse on shutdown — killing the speaker-thump ritual automatically. If you've ever blown a tweeter with a power-off pop, this is the cure.

9. SurgeX SX-DS-158 — the surge-elimination heavyweight

SurgeX's series-mode technology doesn't sacrifice itself like MOV strips — it eliminates surges repeatedly without degrading. The broadcast-grade answer for gear you can't afford to lose.

10. Monster 8001 Pro MI — the long-cord workhorse

Eight outlets and a 15-foot cord — the practical strip for stages where the wall socket is never where you need it.

How to choose

Everyone: start with real surge protection — an M-8z or even the $36 SS-6B beats bare wall power and hardware-store strips. Full racks with power amps: add sequencing (PS8-II) so speakers never eat the turn-on thump. Irreplaceable gear or lightning country: SurgeX's series-mode is the only tech here that survives repeated hits without quietly dying.

What conditioning does NOT do: fix ground-loop hum (that's an isolator's job — see the hum guide), or audibly improve sound in a home with normal power. If your gear buzzes, diagnose the loop first; don't buy a $900 conditioner to solve a $70 problem.

The honest part

Cheap MOV-based strips sacrifice themselves silently — after a few surges, many keep passing power with zero protection left and no warning. That's the actual argument for spending real money here: not tone, but knowing the protection still exists. For everything else, buy the modest Furman and spend the difference on acoustic treatment.

FAQ

Do power conditioners improve sound quality?

In homes with normal power - no, and honest manufacturers don't claim it. They provide surge protection, EMI/RFI filtering for hostile environments, voltage stability and outlet management. Protection is the product.

Do I need a power conditioner for a home studio?

You need real surge protection at minimum - one quality unit protecting the interface, monitors and computer. Full conditioning earns its keep in racks, on stages and in areas with dirty power or storms.

What is a power sequencer?

A unit that switches your gear on in stages (sources first, power amps last) and off in reverse - eliminating the pop that damages speakers. Standard practice in installed and live rigs.

Will a power conditioner fix hum?

Usually not - most hum is ground loops, fixed with transformer isolators. Conditioners address surges and line noise; they complement, not replace, hum eliminators.
