The Best Free Vocal Doubler Plugins in 2026

Free Plugin Guides · Meshplugins.com
A vocal doubler fakes what a singer does when they record the hook twice: a second performance, slightly off in pitch and timing, panned away from the first. The good free ones do that convincingly; the bad ones are a chorus pedal with a new name. The eight below cover the three honest approaches: true doublers, modulated wideners, and imagers that push an existing stack wider.
Free doubling, thickening and widening tools for vocals

Doublers · modulated wideners · stereo imagers · all verified, all current
One distinction first. A doubler creates a new signal (pitch- and time-shifted copies). A widener spreads the signal you have. An imager changes the mid/side balance of something already stereo. On a mono lead, a doubler gives you a stack, a widener a wide single voice, and an imager nothing until there is a side signal.

The 8 best free vocal doubler plugins
1. Vocal Doubler (iZotope) — best all-round free doubler
Built for exactly this job. An X/Y pad controls Separation (how far the generated voices sit left and right) and Variation (pitch and timing drift), with an Amount knob for blend. On a hook, Amount 40–60% gives a believable two-voice stack from one take; on a verse, 15–25% adds thickness without the obvious effect. Limitation: one algorithm, three controls; when it is wrong for a voice there is nothing to adjust. Requires a free iZotope account. VST2/VST3/AU/AAX, Windows and macOS. Free at izotope.com
2. Multiply 2 (Acon Digital) — best for stacks of three to six voices
Multiply simulates up to six additional voices, each passed through a phase-randomizing filter so the copies do not comb-filter against the original, the usual reason cheap doublers sound hollow. Pitch and loudness modulation, wet-signal EQ, pre-delay, and in version 2 a new interface and 80 presets. For a vocal: two voices, low modulation depth, pre-delay 15–25 ms, wet signal high-passed at 200 Hz. Limitation: at higher voice counts and depths it tips into an obvious chorus. VST2/VST3/AAX on Windows, AU/VST2/VST3/AAX on macOS. Free at acondigital.com
3. Wider (Polyverse Music) — best mono-compatible widener
Wider does one thing: it gives a mono signal a stereo image up to 200% wide while staying mono-compatible, so when a phone speaker sums it nothing cancels, the property most wideners fail. Version 2 added a low-end bypass so the body of the voice stays centered. On a lead, 30–50% adds size without sounding processed. Limitation: it does not create a double; a flat mono performance stays flat, just wider. VST2/VST3/AU/AAX, Windows and macOS. Free at polyversemusic.com
4. Space Modulator (Valhalla DSP) — best for detuned, thick doubling with character
Space Modulator is sold as a flanger, but among its eleven algorithms are detune and doubler modes that are some of the best free vocal thickening available, and the through-zero design keeps the modulation smooth rather than metallic. For a double: a detune or doubler mode, low rate, moderate depth, Mix 30–40%. For adlibs, push the depth and let it get strange. Limitation: no visual feedback, and it is easy to drift into obvious flanging. VST2/AU/AAX, Windows and macOS. Free at valhalladsp.com
5. TAL-Chorus-LX (TAL Software) — best classic chorus for a wide, warm double
A standalone version of the Juno-60 chorus from TAL's U-NO-LX synth: two mode buttons (I, II, or both), Dry/Wet, Volume and Stereo Width. The Juno chorus is the sound of many 80s and lo-fi vocal doubles; on a background bus, mode I at 30–40% wet glues a stack into one wide layer. Limitation: it is a chorus, so on a lead the modulation reads as a slow wobble; use it on stacks and adlibs. VST2/VST3/AU/AAX/CLAP, Windows, macOS and Linux. Free at tal-software.com
6. StereoDoubler (Airwindows) — best raw, no-GUI detune double
StereoDoubler detunes the input and puts one copy hard left and one hard right, with a dry/wet control to blend them under the original. Keep the detune small for a wide, rich spread; push it and you get the pops the developer himself warns about. It is the closest free thing to the hardware micro-pitch trick engineers use on hooks. Limitation: sliders only, no GUI. Standalone VST2/AU, or inside Airwindows Consolidated (VST3/AU/CLAP/LV2), Windows, macOS and Linux. Free at airwindows.com
7. Ozone Imager 2 (iZotope) — best imager for an already-stacked vocal
The imaging module from Ozone as a free standalone: a Width control, two Stereoize modes that turn mono into stereo, a vectorscope and a correlation meter. On a stereo background bus, Width at +20 to +40 pushes the stack outward while the meter shows whether you are about to cancel in mono; Stereoize II is the cleaner mode for voices. Limitation: on a mono lead there is nothing to widen until Stereoize is on, and Stereoize is an effect, not a double. Requires a free iZotope account. VST2/VST3/AU/AAX, Windows and macOS. Free at izotope.com
8. A1StereoControl (A1 Audio) — best utility widener with a bass guard
A1StereoControl expands or narrows width from 0 to 200%, with a Safe Bass control that keeps everything below an adjustable frequency centered, plus pan laws and a linear-phase option. On a doubled vocal bus it goes last: widen 110–130%, Safe Bass at 150–200 Hz so the chest tone stays centered, check in mono. Limitation: a utility that sounds like one; no modulation, no color, no double. VST2/VST3/AU/AAX, Windows and macOS, Apple Silicon native. Free at a1audio.de

How to use them in a vocal chain
Doublers go after the corrective chain and before the time-based sends: EQ, de-esser, compression, saturation, pitch correction, then the doubler last, so it thickens a finished, tuned voice. On a hook: Vocal Doubler or Multiply on the lead at 30–50%, Wider or A1StereoControl on the background bus at 110–130%, reverb and delay sends fed from after the doubler. Keep the verse lead dry and centered; the width arriving on the hook is the contrast. Stereo delay for vocal width covers the send-based alternative.
The trick that beats any single plugin: duplicate the lead, nudge the copy 15–25 ms late, pan the pair 30–40% left and right, and put a tiny pitch drift on the copy only (Baby Audio's free Pitch Drift at a low Amount, or Space Modulator's detune at a few cents). That is a manufactured double with real timing variation. Then run the Vocal–Beat Balance Check in mono: if the hook drops more than 1–2 dB when summed, the width is costing you level on phones.
When it's worth upgrading to paid
The paid references are Soundtoys MicroShift, which recreates the Eventide micro-pitch doubling trick engineers have used on hooks for decades, and Antares Harmony Engine when you need pitched harmonies rather than a thickened unison. Real steps up for a vocal-heavy genre, but the free list above covers most hooks. When you decide to buy, check the current deals first; doublers go on sale often.
FAQ
Is a vocal doubler better than recording a real double?
No. A real double has different breath, consonant timing and vowel shapes, which no plugin generates. A doubler is for when the second take does not exist, for thickening a real double further, or for adlibs where the effect is the point. Record the double when you can; here is how.
Why does my doubled vocal sound thin or hollow?
Comb filtering: the copies are too close in time (under about 10 ms) or too similar in pitch, so they cancel at certain frequencies. Move the delay to 15–25 ms, add a few cents of detune, or use a doubler like Multiply that randomizes phase per voice. Check in mono.
Should the lead vocal be doubled or only the hook?
In most genres, only the hook and backgrounds. A centered single lead on the verse gives the doubled hook something to grow from; double everything and nothing is wide by comparison.

5+ years ago I moved to LA with zero connections and started building from nothing — 14-hour days, meeting people and interning at studios. It took me 5+ years to meet and interview 100+ Grammy-winning engineers — then I turned it all into the Vocal Chain Bible.
