The Best Free Plugins for R&B Vocals in 2026

Free Plugin Guides · Meshplugins.com
An R&B vocal asks for specific things: compression that is slow and invisible, not punchy; esses tamed without dulling the breath; an air band that opens the top without exciter grit; a hall that stays lush under long notes; doubles that sit wide; and pitch correction nobody hears. The seven free plugins below each do one of those jobs properly, and together they build a complete R&B vocal chain for nothing.
Free plugins that fit the R&B vocal sound

Smooth compression · de-ess · air · plate/hall · doubling · light tune
R&B needs its own list because of dynamics. A rap vocal can take a fast FET compressor slamming 8 dB. An R&B lead with runs, falsetto and sustained notes cannot: fast compression chops the vibrato, hard de-essing kills the breathy consonants, and trap-hook tuning makes a melisma sound like a keyboard. Every pick here is slow, soft and controllable.

The 7 best free plugins for R&B vocals
1. MJUC jr (Klanghelm) — best for smooth, slow vocal compression
MJUC jr is a variable-mu tube compressor model, the Fairchild and Manley family engineers reach for when a voice should get denser without getting harder. Three controls: Compress, Make-up and a Timing switch (fast, slow, auto). For a sung lead, Timing on slow or auto, Compress raised until the meter shows 3–5 dB on the strongest phrases. The program-dependent release breathes with the vocal instead of fighting the vibrato. Limitation: no threshold, attack or ratio, so it is a tone and a level, not a surgical tool. VST2/VST3/AU/AAX, Windows and macOS. Free at klanghelm.com
2. T-De-Esser (Techivation) — best for de-essing without losing the breath
Techivation's free de-esser is built around an Intensity control, a frequency-range selector and a listen mode, and its smoothing is gentle enough that a breathy consonant survives. Range over 5–8 kHz, Intensity until the loudest "s" drops 3–4 dB, quieter ones left alone; for a very bright voice, move the range toward 7–10 kHz. Limitation: simple by design; split-band modes and a sidechain display are in the paid tier. It is a free checkout on the Techivation site. VST2/VST3/AU/AAX, Windows and macOS. Free at techivation.com
3. TDR Nova (Tokyo Dawn Labs) — best for the air band and resonance control
Nova is a four-band dynamic EQ, and on an R&B vocal it does two jobs in one instance. First, a static high shelf at 10–12 kHz, +2 to +3 dB: the clean "air" that makes a vocal sound expensive, with no exciter grit. Second, a dynamic bell at the nasal or boxy resonance (usually 800 Hz–1.2 kHz or 250–400 Hz) that ducks 2–3 dB only when a note lands there. Limitation: four bands go fast; keep the broad tonal EQ in your stock plugin. VST2/VST3/AU/AAX, Windows and macOS. Free at tokyodawn.net
4. Valhalla Supermassive (Valhalla DSP) — best for the lush plate or hall
Supermassive is a feedback-delay-network reverb and delay with more than 20 modes, and the free reverb that most sounds like the expensive halls on R&B records. On an aux at 100% wet: a long-tail mode like Gemini or Hydra; pre-delay 30–60 ms so the words stay in front; decay 2–4 seconds; high-cut the return near 8 kHz. Blend until you only hear it when the vocal stops. Limitation: no true plate algorithm; run your DAW's stock plate alongside it for the shimmer. VST2/VST3/AU/AAX, Windows and macOS. Free at valhalladsp.com
5. Valhalla Freq Echo (Valhalla DSP) — best for the quarter-note throw
Freq Echo is a free delay with a frequency shifter in the feedback path. With Shift at zero it is a clean analog-style echo for the throws that define R&B phrasing: a quarter or eighth note on the last word of a line, feedback 20–30%, filtered to sit behind the dry vocal. A few hertz of Shift makes each repeat drift in pitch, the "dreamy" tail on a lot of modern R&B. Automate the send per word. Limitation: no tempo sync; the Delay and Reverb Time Calculator gives you the milliseconds for your BPM. VST2/VST3/AU/AAX, Windows and macOS. Free at valhalladsp.com
6. Vocal Doubler (iZotope) — best for widening the hook
iZotope's free Vocal Doubler generates a natural double from one take: an X/Y pad sets Separation (how far left and right) and Variation (pitch and timing drift), plus an Amount control. On a hook, Amount 30–50% adds width without chorus wobble; on a verse keep it under 20% or off. Limitation: one algorithm with three controls, and on a very dry vocal the double can sound slightly phasey in mono. Requires a free iZotope account. VST2/VST3/AU/AAX, Windows and macOS. Free at izotope.com
7. MAutoPitch (MeldaProduction) — best for pitch correction that nobody hears
MAutoPitch, part of MeldaProduction's free bundle, is a straightforward automatic pitch corrector: set the scale, then Depth for how hard it pulls and Speed for how fast, plus Detune, Width and formant shift. For R&B the point is restraint: Depth 60–80% and a slow Speed so the correction catches the center of each note and leaves slides and runs alone. Limitation: the free version shows a reminder bar and locks out GUI resizing and oversampling; the processing is not restricted. VST2/VST3/AU/AAX, Windows and macOS. Free at meldaproduction.com

How to use them in a vocal chain
In insert order on the lead: stock EQ with a high-pass at 70–90 Hz (lower than a rap vocal, since the chest tone matters) and one 2 dB cut where the mic was boxy; T-De-Esser; MJUC jr catching 3–5 dB on slow timing; a second gentle stage if the take is uneven (stock compressor at 2:1, slow attack, 2–3 dB); TDR Nova with the air shelf and one dynamic band; MAutoPitch last, at a depth you cannot hear. Sends: Supermassive on one aux, Freq Echo on another automated per word, Vocal Doubler on the hook tracks only. That is the structure most engineers describe for melodic vocals; the attack and release guide explains why slow settings are the whole game for a sung voice.
Before any of it, ride the clip gain: R&B takes move 10–15 dB between a whispered verse and a belted bridge. The Clip Gain Planner writes the move list, and the Vocal Sibilance Finder tells you where to aim the de-esser.
When it's worth upgrading to paid
The first paid plugin that changes an R&B vocal is a real opto compressor: the LA-2A emulations from Universal Audio or Arturia do the slow, forgiving leveling MJUC jr approximates. The second is a dedicated plate such as Valhalla VintageVerb or Plate, for the shimmer Supermassive does not do. The third is Antares Auto-Tune Pro or Melodyne for note-by-note editing when automatic correction is not enough. None are urgent; when you do buy, check the current deals first; the free chain above holds until the sale.
FAQ
What compressor settings work for R&B vocals?
Slow attack (10–30 ms), medium-slow or auto release, ratio 2:1 to 4:1, 3–5 dB of gain reduction per stage, and two gentle stages rather than one hard one so the vibrato survives. Fast attacks belong on rap vocals.
Should R&B vocals be autotuned?
Almost always corrected, rarely audibly. Set the depth so note centers lock but slides and melisma are left alone. The hard, locked effect is a creative choice for a hook, not the default for the lead.
Plate or hall reverb for R&B?
Both, often at once: a short plate (1–1.5 s) for presence and a longer hall (2–4 s) with 30–60 ms pre-delay for the wash. The vocal reverb settings guide has the numbers by tempo.

5+ years ago I moved to LA with zero connections and started building from nothing — 14-hour days, meeting people and interning at studios. It took me 5+ years to meet and interview 100+ Grammy-winning engineers — then I turned it all into the Vocal Chain Bible.
