The Best Free Plugins for Reaper in 2026

Free Plugin Guides · Meshplugins.com
Reaper ships with the most complete free plugin set of any DAW: the ReaPlugs (ReaComp, ReaEQ, ReaXcomp, ReaFIR, ReaVerb, ReaDelay, ReaTune, ReaPitch) plus several hundred JSFX scripts. So this list has a different job than the same list for another DAW. It is not about filling gaps. It is about the eight free third-party plugins that do what the Rea-plugins and JSFX do not: color, character, instruments, and a tool that shows you what your chain is really doing.
Free third-party plugins that earn a slot next to the ReaPlugs
8 FREE
VST3 and CLAP on Windows, macOS and Linux · plus the stock set everyone underrates
First, what you already own. ReaComp is a full compressor with sidechain filtering, lookahead and wet/dry. ReaXcomp is an unlimited-band multiband compressor. ReaFIR does FFT noise removal and spectral gating. ReaEQ has unlimited bands. ReaTune corrects pitch, ReaPitch shifts it. Among the JSFX, the 1175 Compressor is a usable 1176-style model, and ReaPack (a free package manager) adds hundreds more. What none of that does is sound like analog hardware, generate a sound from nothing, or draw the frequency response of your chain. That is the list below.

The 8 best free third-party plugins for Reaper
1. Airwindows Consolidated (Airwindows) — best for analog color in one plugin
Chris Johnson's Airwindows catalog is more than 400 algorithms, historically released as separate GUI-less plugins. Consolidated packs them into one plugin with a browser and built-in documentation. The vocal-relevant ones: Pressure4 (a dense, musical compressor), Density (saturation), ToTape, DeEss, Galactic (a huge reverb) and the Console series for bus color. Limitation: no visual feedback at all, and the number of options is paralyzing until you learn ten of them. VST3/AU/CLAP/LV2 and standalone, Windows, macOS and Linux. Free at airwindows.com
2. Kilohearts Essentials (Kilohearts) — best set of small, clean utilities
More than 30 single-purpose effects: Compressor, Limiter, Gate, Transient Shaper, 3-Band EQ, Chorus, Ensemble, Haas, Stereo, Pitch Shifter, Delay, Reverb and a clipper, each with four to eight controls and a clear GUI. The Transient Shaper and Haas are the ones you will keep reaching for on vocals and adlibs. Limitation: deliberately simple; the deep modulation lives in the paid Phase Plant and Multipass. VST2/VST3/AU/AAX, Windows and macOS. Free at kilohearts.com
3. ChowTapeModel (Chowdhury DSP) — best tape saturation
An open-source physical model of a reel-to-reel tape machine: Drive, Saturation, Bias, tape speed, wow and flutter, loss filter. On a vocal, Drive and Saturation at 20–30% gives the compressed, rounded top end engineers describe as gluing the vocal to the beat; push it and it becomes a lo-fi effect. Limitation: the higher oversampling settings are CPU-heavy; raise them only for the render. VST2/VST3/AU/AAX/LV2/CLAP and standalone, Windows, macOS, Linux and iOS. Free at chowdsp.com
4. Surge XT (Surge Synth Team) — best free synth for Reaper
Surge XT is an open-source hybrid synth: two scenes per patch, three oscillators per scene with twelve algorithms including wavetable, FM and string models, and 2800+ factory patches. It matches Reaper's culture: deep, free, open, cross-platform, community-maintained. Limitation: the interface is dense and browsing 2800 patches is slow until you use favorites. VST3/AU/CLAP/LV2 and standalone, Windows, macOS and Linux. Free at surge-synthesizer.github.io
5. TyrellN6 (u-he) — best analog-style synth for bass and pads
A compact two-oscillator analog model in the Juno family, with ring mod, noise, two LFOs and a filter that sounds like hardware. It is the quick way to a bass or pad that sits under a vocal without fighting it. Limitation: a focused design, not a workstation synth, and the 2025 3.0 build is still labeled beta. VST2/VST3/AU/AAX/CLAP, Windows, macOS and Linux. Free at u-he.com
6. Protoverb (u-he) — best natural room reverb
Protoverb is u-he's experimental room simulator: it models a room with resonances rather than a plate or hall algorithm, and the result is a short, believable space for under a vocal when a lush reverb would be too much. Small size, decay under a second, 10–15% mix as the glue room behind the main reverb. Limitation: a research plugin with an unusual interface, and the macOS build currently ships without AAX (irrelevant in Reaper). VST3/AU on macOS, VST3/AAX on Windows. Free at u-he.com
7. EQ Curve Analyzer (Bertom Audio) — best for seeing what a chain actually does
Put one instance before a plugin or a whole chain and one after, and EQ Curve Analyzer draws the resulting frequency response. Every saturator and "analog" compressor becomes a curve you can read, and the freebies that claim warmth and deliver a 2 dB low shelf are exposed. Pay what you want, zero accepted. Limitation: it measures linear response, not dynamic behavior. VST3/AU/AAX, Windows, macOS and Linux. Free at bertomaudio.com
8. Freeware Pack II (Blue Cat Audio) — best free analyzer and modulation set
Seven plugins: Chorus, Flanger, Phaser, FreqAnalyst (a clean spectrum analyzer), Gain Suite, Triple EQ and Free Amp. FreqAnalyst is the one for vocal work: put it on the vocal and the instrumental to see where they collide. Limitation: the interfaces look dated and Free Amp is a taster for the paid Axiom. No registration required. VST2/VST3/AU/AAX, Windows and macOS. Free at bluecataudio.com
Quick pick: stock Rea-plugin or third-party free?
| If you need… | Reach for | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Clean vocal compression | ReaComp (stock) | Sidechain HPF, lookahead, wet/dry already built in |
| Colored, analog-feeling compression | Airwindows Pressure4 | Density and glue ReaComp will not add |
| Tape warmth on a vocal | ChowTapeModel | Drive 20–30%, real tape behavior |
| De-essing | ReaXcomp band at 6–8 kHz or Airwindows DeEss | Both free; ReaXcomp gives you the curve |
| A sound from nothing | Surge XT or TyrellN6 | ReaSynth is a test oscillator, not an instrument |
| Proof of what the chain did | Bertom EQ Curve Analyzer | Measure before/after instead of guessing |
How to use them in a vocal chain
A Reaper vocal chain mixing stock and free third-party, in FX-slot order: ReaEQ high-pass at 80–100 Hz plus one 2–3 dB cut at the mic's boxy frequency; ReaXcomp with a single band at 6–8 kHz as a de-esser; ReaComp as the fast first compressor, 4:1, 1–3 ms attack, catching 2–4 dB; Airwindows Pressure4 or the JS 1175 as the slower second stage, 3–4 dB; ChowTapeModel at 20–30% Drive; ReaTune if the song needs correction. Sends: ReaVerb or Protoverb for the room, ReaDelay for slap at 80–120 ms. Bertom EQ Curve Analyzer first and last while you build, then remove both. That is the serial-compression structure the pros describe; the serial compression article explains why two gentle stages beat one hard one. Reaper-specific move: use the per-FX wet/dry knob instead of a parallel bus for the compressor. Run the order through the Vocal Chain Order Checker before saving it as an FX chain.
When it's worth upgrading to paid
Reaper plus the stock set plus these eight covers more than most people will ever need. Money still buys a real difference in two places: a character compressor (the UAD or Arturia 1176 and LA-2A models, or FabFilter Pro-C 2 for a clean stage with a better display than ReaComp) and a vocal reverb like Valhalla VintageVerb or Room. If you are going to buy, check the current deals and wait for the sale; with this free list installed, you are never buying under pressure.
FAQ
Does Reaper support CLAP plugins?
Yes. Reaper loads VST2, VST3, AU (on macOS), CLAP, LV2 and its own JSFX. Airwindows Consolidated and Surge XT both ship CLAP builds, which tend to be the most efficient option in Reaper.
Are the ReaPlugs good enough to mix vocals with?
Yes, for everything except color. ReaComp, ReaEQ, ReaXcomp and ReaDelay are complete, transparent tools. What they do not give you is the saturation and density of hardware-style plugins, which is what Airwindows and ChowTapeModel add.
Why does a new plugin not show up in Reaper?
Open Options > Preferences > Plug-ins > VST, confirm the installer's folder is in the path list, and click Re-scan; CLAP has its own folder in the same section. Plugins that failed to scan appear in the FX browser's failed list and can be retried.

Chains with the reasons left in.
The Vocal Chain Bible is 88 real vocal chains from hit records, as the engineers described them — mic, preamp, every plugin and setting, in order, with a free-plugin version of every chain. Every chain comes with the reason behind each setting, so you know what to move for your voice.

5+ years ago I moved to LA with zero connections and started building from nothing — 14-hour days, meeting people and interning at studios. It took me 5+ years to meet and interview 100+ Grammy-winning engineers — then I turned it all into the Vocal Chain Bible.
