The Best Free Plugins for GarageBand (AU) in 2026

Free Plugin Guides · Meshplugins.com

GarageBand hosts third-party plugins, and almost nobody uses that. The rule is simple: on a Mac it loads Audio Units (AU) and nothing else, so every VST-only freebie is out and every AU freebie is in. The eight below are all free, all AU, and they add what the stock set is missing most: a compressor with character, hard pitch correction, a lush reverb, multiband control, saturation, and three instrument libraries beyond the built-in sounds.

Free Audio Units that work in GarageBand

8 FREE

All AU · macOS only · installed in minutes, no iLok

GarageBand's own plugins are the same engines as Logic's: Compressor, Channel EQ, reverbs, delays, Pitch Correction. They are good. What they lack is the specific thing each plugin below does better. You do not need all eight; install the two or three that fix your actual problem first.

How to install AU plugins in GarageBand

Run the developer's installer; it puts the AU component in /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components. In GarageBand > Settings > Audio/MIDI, make sure Enable Audio Units is checked. Quit and relaunch GarageBand after installing anything: it scans and validates Audio Units at launch, and a plugin that fails validation is silently hidden rather than listed with an error. Then select a track, open Smart Controls (press B), click an empty slot in the Plug-ins area, hover over a category and pick the plugin from the Audio Units submenu. Instruments load the same way through the instrument slot on a Software Instrument track. Two limits: GarageBand has no sidechain input, and only 64-bit plugins load.

The 8 best free AU plugins for GarageBand

1. Valhalla Supermassive (Valhalla DSP) — best for vocal reverb and big delays

GarageBand's stock reverbs are usable; Supermassive is the one that makes a vocal sound like a record. It is a feedback-delay-network reverb and delay with more than 20 modes. For a vocal: Mix 20–30% on the track (GarageBand has no custom aux buses for third-party effects, so insert it directly), pre-delay 20–40 ms, Width 70–80%. Limitation: no tight small-room algorithm, so keep the stock reverb for short ambience. AU/VST2/VST3/AAX, macOS and Windows. Free at valhalladsp.com

2. DC1A (Klanghelm) — best for a vocal compressor that sounds like something

Two knobs, Input and Output, plus switches for Relaxed (slower, RMS-style), Deep (sidechain high-pass so bass does not pump it), Dual Mono and Negative. Raise Input until the meter shows 3–6 dB of reduction on the loud words and you have more character than the stock compressor on a GUI a beginner can read. The Mix knob gives you parallel compression on one track, which matters in GarageBand's limited routing. Limitation: no attack or ratio controls. AU/VST2/VST3/AAX, macOS and Windows. Free at klanghelm.com

3. Graillon 2 Free Edition (Auburn Sounds) — best for the Autotune sound

GarageBand's built-in Pitch Correction handles a gentle tune but not the hard, locked Autotune effect of melodic rap and pop. Graillon 2 Free does: set the scale to the song key, Smooth to 0 for hard tune or 40–60 ms for natural, and it is low-latency enough to sing through. Limitation: the Free Edition stops at the pitch shifter and pitch correction modules, and fast runs are less clean than Antares Auto-Tune or Melodyne. AU/VST2/VST3/AAX/CLAP, macOS, Windows and Linux. Free at auburnsounds.com

4. OTT (Xfer Records) — best for multiband grip on vocals and drums

OTT is a three-band upward and downward compressor, a recreation of a famous Ableton preset. At Depth 100% it is an EDM effect; at 15–30% on a vocal it evens out the low, mid and high bands at once and brings up breathy detail a single-band compressor leaves behind. Limitation: easy to overdo. Above 40% on a vocal it sounds like a podcast filter. AU/VST/AAX, macOS and Windows, Apple Silicon native. Free at xferrecords.com

5. Saturation Knob (Softube) — best for warmth and density

One knob, three modes. Keep High at 2–4 on a vocal makes it denser and more present without mud; Keep Low on an 808 adds weight. Limitation: it installs through Softube Central with a free account; there is no direct download. AU/VST2/VST3/AAX, macOS and Windows. Free at softube.com

6. LABS (Spitfire Audio) — best for cinematic and acoustic instruments

LABS is Spitfire's free sample library series: soft piano, strings, choir, pads, drums and dozens more, each a real sampled instrument. Spitfire has moved the library into the free Splice Instrument plugin and existing LABS installs are detected, so start at Spitfire's site and follow whichever download it offers. Limitation: packs run from hundreds of megabytes to gigabytes, and the free content is a curated subset of the Spitfire catalog. AU/VST3/AAX, macOS and Windows. Free at spitfireaudio.com

7. Vital (Vital Audio) — best free synth, full stop

Vital is a spectral wavetable synth with three oscillators, drag-and-drop modulation and a built-in effects rack. The Basic tier is free and includes the complete engine; paid tiers add presets and wavetables, not features. Limitation: the OpenGL GUI can be heavy on an older Intel MacBook; close the window during playback if it stutters. AU/VST/VST3/LV2 and standalone, macOS, Windows and Linux. Free at vital.audio

8. Komplete Start (Native Instruments) — best bundle for the price of an account

Komplete Start is Native Instruments' free collection: Kontakt Player with free libraries, Guitar Rig Player, the Raum reverb, the Supercharger compressor, the Replika delay and more. Raum and Supercharger are real mixing tools, and Kontakt Player opens the door to free Kontakt-format libraries. Limitation: it installs through Native Access, the download is large, and "Player" instruments have locked content. AU/VST/VST3/AAX, macOS and Windows. Free at native-instruments.com

How to use them in a vocal chain

GarageBand's insert slots run top to bottom, so build in that order: stock Channel EQ with a high-pass at 80–100 Hz and a 2–3 dB cut where the mic was boxy (usually 250–400 Hz); DC1A catching 3–6 dB with Deep on; OTT at 15–25% only if the vocal is thin; Saturation Knob, Keep High, at 2–3; Graillon 2 if the song needs tuning; stock DeEsser; Supermassive at 20–30% mix last. That is a one-track version of the most common vocal chain, and the Vocal Chain Order Checker will confirm the order.

Level the take first. GarageBand has no clip gain, so use track volume automation (press A): pull shouted words down 3–4 dB and lift mumbled ones so the compressor is not doing a fader's job. The Clip Gain Planner writes that move list.

When it's worth upgrading to paid

The honest upgrade from GarageBand is Logic Pro, not a plugin: real buses and sends, a plugin manager that shows which AU failed validation, Flex Pitch, and the full version of every stock effect. After that, the paid references that fill the gaps in this free list are a character compressor (the Universal Audio or Arturia 1176 and LA-2A emulations) and a dedicated vocal reverb such as Valhalla VintageVerb. When you are ready, check the current deals and buy on a sale, not a deadline.

FAQ

Why does my plugin not show up in GarageBand?

Four checks: it must be an AU component (not a VST), 64-bit, Enable Audio Units must be on in Settings > Audio/MIDI, and you must relaunch GarageBand after installing. If it still does not appear, it failed AU validation; reinstall the latest version, since GarageBand hides failed plugins without a warning.

Can I use third-party instruments in GarageBand?

Yes. On a Software Instrument track, open Smart Controls, click the instrument slot and choose the AU instrument from the Audio Units submenu. LABS, Vital and Kontakt Player all load this way.

Do these plugins work in GarageBand for iPad?

Only if the developer ships an AUv3 version on the App Store. The builds listed here are for GarageBand on a Mac.
