How to choose

Count the mics you'll actually stand up. Live club sound: kick + snare (KS-Combo) covers 80% of rooms. Full studio close-mic: 7-piece (DP7, e600). The dirty secret: most kits EXCLUDE overheads (e600 excepted) - and overheads carry the cymbals and half the kit sound. Budget a condenser pair (see our condenser guide) or buy the kit that includes them.

Kick and snare mics are the specialists worth the money. Kick mics (Beta 52, D6, e602) are pre-voiced for the 60Hz thump and 4kHz click; snare mics survive rimshots at 2cm. What's actually in a drum mic kit?

Typically: one kick mic (large-diaphragm dynamic), one snare mic (tight dynamic), and 2-4 tom mics with rim clips, in a case. Overheads (condensers for cymbals/glue) are usually NOT included - the classic gotcha.

How many mics do I really need?

Live small venue: kick + snare (+ vocal mics). Studio natural sound: kick + 2 overheads. Modern produced sound: 7-8 close mics + overheads + room. Start minimal - each added mic doubles the phase homework.

Do I need mic stands too?
